This anonymous work appears to be an adaptation, sometimes verbatim, of the important work entitled Historie cronologiche della vera origine di tutti gl’ ordini equestri e religioni cavalleresche byBernardo Giustiniani first published in Venice, Presso Combi & LaNoù, in 1672, and again in 1692 under the title Historie cronologiche dell’origine degl’ordini militari e di tutte le religioni cavalleresche infino ad hora instituite nel mondo. Giustiniani’s work was important although perhaps less widespread than another catalogue of chivalric orders, that of Filipo Buonnani, Catalogo degli ordini equestri e militari, Rome, 1711. Bernardo Giustiniani was an abbot and Knight Grand-Cross of the imperial Order of Saint-George.

Each description highlights the origins, rites, and scope of each order. The work follows more or less faithfully the order of Giustiniani’s 1672 edition. The work is divided into four separate parts. The first part covers the ancient orders of chivalry, such as the Order of the Ring. The second part addresses the orders instituted by emperors, kings, and important lords. Although the focus is on Italian (or Mediterranean) orders, some of the more famous northern orders, such as the Order of the Garter of England, and the Order of Saint Michael and that of the Porcupine in France, are included. The third part presents papal orders, such as the Order of the Golden Spur, the Knights of Saint George, the Knights of Saints Peter and Paul, etc. Finally the fourth part, most interestingly, presents feminine orders, including the famous Order of the Cordelière founded by Anne of Brittany in 1498. The small portable format of this little manuscript made it an easy “vademecum” and underscores the highly pan-European aspect of chivalry and military monastic orders, transcending traditional borders.

Literature

Bascapé, Giacomo, Gli Ordini Cavallereschi in Italia.
